In Memoriam

Dr. Gerald May 1940-2005

Dr. Gerald (Jerry) May, Shalem's Senior Fellow in Contemplative Theology and Psychology, died in April 2005 at the age of 64 after a lengthy illness.

At Shalem Jerry taught and mentored thousands of men and women seeking to deepen their spiritual lives – "touching the lives of many," according to the Reverend Donald Krickbaum, former Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Miami, Florida, "and opening doors to God that we did not even know were there until he pointed the way."

Jerry joined the Shalem Institute as an associate in 1973 and in 1983 became a full-time staff member. From 1983 to 2005, he served Shalem as Director of Spiritual Guidance; Director for Research and Program Development; and finally as Senior Fellow in Contemplative Theology and Psychology. Over a period of 35 years, he wrote nine books (listed below) and dozens of articles as well as 63 Shalem News articles, now collected in one volume, Living in Love [click here for more details].

The Summer 2005 Shalem News was dedicated to Jerry's memory and contains remembrances from Shalem staff as well as a collection of Jerry's writings.  To read through that issue, please click here.
