The five human senses (taste, touch, sight, smell, hearing) are areas where we can open up this sensitivity and awareness. This course will offer opportunities to examine, experience and explore our relationship with God through the five senses. Each class will offer a different sensory experience as we seek to deepen and expand our modes of prayer.

Event:  Meeting God in Silence: A Silent Retreat
Dates:  April 5-7, 2013
Time:  3 PM Friday to lunch on Sunday
Place:   St Francis Springs Prayer Center, 477 Grogan Road, Stoneville, NC  27048
Cost:  $50 non-refundable deposit by 3/15; $260 (single room); $220 (double/triple room)
Details:  Silence is in many ways a stranger to our lives. Our culture does not honor silence but rather fills our lives with noise. Our minds are not trained for silence but rather for worry or stimulation. Silence is often foreign to both our inner and outer lives. For some—and for all at times—silence can even unsettle us, stirring up fear of the void.  Yet, as the 16th century Spanish monastic John of the Cross said, “Silence is the primary language of God.” Genesis recounts that out of the silence God spoke and created the world, “Then God said, ‘Let there be light’ and there was light.” God still speaks to us out of the silence and creates new worlds within each of us, calling us to become that person we are created to be. It is a good and wondrous thing to make time for silence, time for being with God in the silence, for making a quiet place wherein we can simply listen, rest, and receive. This weekend away provides time to lay down those things that press upon us so relentlessly so that we might walk more closely with God for a while. St. Francis Prayer Center, deep in the country north of Greensboro, provides a peaceful place to let go of the world and breathe deeply.
Leader: The Rev. Winston B. Charles, PhD, is a Shalem board member and graduate of Shalem's Spiritual Guidance Program and Leading Contemplative Prayer Groups & Retreat Program.

Washington, DC

Event:  Evelyn Underhill Quiet Day—Becoming the Parent of New Life
Dates:  Saturday June 15, 2013
Time:  9:30 AM to 3:30 PM
Place:  Sayre House, The Washington National Cathedral, Washington, DC
Cost:  $35; $15 for students
Details: During her lifetime, Evelyn Underhill was admired and appreciated for her personality as well as for her ideas—for her groundedness and integrity, for her humor, for her transparency as a living icon. In this sense, her wisdom was "caught" as well as taught. Although Underhill never bore children of her own, her vocation as a Mother of Souls was central to her identity. At this year's Day of Quiet, we will explore Underhill's friendships with those who sought her guidance in relation to the life of the Spirit. We will look particularly at her extensive correspondence, the letters that functioned as a "mysterious link between soul and soul," seeking clues about how—and where and when—she approached the practice traditionally described as "spiritual direction."
Leader: Merrill Ware Carrington, M. Div., is a retreat leader and, for twenty years, has been actively engaged in the ministry of spiritual direction. An Episcopal laywoman, she lived for several years in London, just around the corner from the house where Underhill, during the Blitz, spent the final months of her life. Merrill was a regular communicant at the parish church in whose churchyard Underhill is buried.

The participants will gather mid -point at the beautiful retreat center of Bon Secours in Marriottsville, MD. The last three-month phase will focus on an individualized program of reading from a classic spiritual text(s) and increasing conscious integration of spirituality/interior prayer with ministry practice. Austria

Event: Kairos Platzl
Dates: Ongoing
Time: Mondays and Fridays from 20-21h. for meditation in the chapel.  Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11h. and 20-21h.
Place: 5505 Mühlbach am Hochkönig, Mandlwandstrasse 437 AUSTRIA
Cost: Please call or email for a place.  The seating is limited. You may also make a private appointment.
Details: “Kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment(the supreme moment).  The Acient Greeks had two words for time, chronos and kairos.  While the former refers to chronological or sequential time, the latter signifies a time in between, a moment of indeterminate time in which something special happens.  What that special something is depends on the individual.  While chronos is quantitative, kairos has a qualitative nature.”  (Wikipedia) Clair and Rainer Ullmann moved ten years ago to this beautiful area in Austria.  They always dreamed of a place where they could invite people to come and be, to enjoy nature, inhale the fresh mountain air, be reconnected with nature, listen to the voice within, and recharge their “batteries.”  The time has come, the “Platzl” is prepared and the invitation is extended. As locals we are often blind to what is in front of us.  For visitors to our region, this is a unique welcome to begin their holiday:  to prepare their bodies, minds, and spirits for the energy and radiance of Hochkoenig.  It is an invitation to live more fully into this experience of nature as they hike, rest, and enjoy this mountain lifestyle. Come and visit this special “Platzl" and feel the peace that Clair and Rainer have found here.  It offers rest, time to be, words of encouragement and reflection. Time is precious.  You are precious.  Come and join us in this informal and relaxed atmosphere as we breathe in this “Kairos.” Discover who you are and where you are being led.  Clair is waiting to welcome you.  This is a free gift!
