What is Contemplative Spirituality?

Although the spiritual life may take many forms, it is always and foremost about love. Perhaps the most profound and pure experience of this love occurs in what the traditions refer to as contemplation. In popular usage, to contemplate something is to think about it, considering it from a variety of angles. This is not at all the understanding of the classical authors of spirituality. Classically, contemplation is a particular kind of experience, usually occurring in the context of prayer. It is a sheer experience of loving presence, and it comes as pure gift… Read more.

SHALEM PROGRAMS

Which program is right for me?

Living and Leadership: To help visitors better navigate our offerings, we’ve divided our programs into two categories. Programs under the “Living” category are designed to support you in your contemplative life, helping you to stay anchored in prayer and responsive to God. Programs in the “Leadership” category support you in various Leadership roles, as you strive to stay connected to the True Leader: the Spirit. View Living and Leadership programs here.

Info Calls, Taste and See Days, and Free Mini-Retreat Days: These free, virtual events offer opportunities to learn more about pilgrimages and long-term programs. Here you can ask questions and listen to program leaders and graduates/past pilgrims talk about the program. When available, these opportunities are listed on the specific program page and are announced in our eNews and other mailings. If you can’t attend on a particular day, you can still sign up – often these events will be recorded and the recordings will be emailed to registrants.

Testimonials: Browsing our testimonial page is another way to become familiar with what our various programs have to offer through the words of other contemplatives.

Shalem’s Mailing List: Through our eNews and other mailings, you’ll not only learn about upcoming programs and events; you’ll also experience contemplative-focused articles written by the Shalem community, inspirational quotes, and other resources. Join here.

I’m interested in a particular Shalem program, but the cost is beyond my financial means.

We want our programs to be accessible to everyone who feels a calling. Thanks to our generous donors, we are able to offer need-based tuition assistance for many of our long-term programs. Most long-term programs also have Early Bird registration deadlines with lower prices. Some of our short-term programs offer different price tiers for different budgets. If you are deeply interested in a program and don’t see any of these options available, you can reach out to the registrar of that program (listed at the bottom of the program page) to see if there are any opportunities.

MY SHALEM ACCOUNT

How do I create a Shalem account?

If you have ever joined our mailing list or registered/applied for a Shalem offering, then you already have a Shalem account linked to the email address you used. To create a password for your account, go to this page and enter the email address you used to sign up for our mailing list or to register for a program. Then click “Send Email” and follow the instructions in the email. If you are creating an account to access an online course or online retreat day, it is especially important that you enter the same email address you used to register for that course/retreat day; contact info@shalem.org if you need help.

If you are new to Shalem, enter your email address on this page and click “Send Email.” Then follow the instructions in the email.

If you are having difficulty, see detailed instructions here.

How do I see my payment plan, one-time payments, or the programs I’m enrolled in?

On Desktop/Laptop: First log into your account (if you’re having difficulty, see instructions here). Then go to your profile page at this link. Beneath your name, email address, and date when you joined Shalem, you should see a menu bar with several options, including “History and eCourse links.” Click on that link. You will see the history of your payment plans, unpaid invoices, applications, registrations, and more.

On Mobile: First log into your account (if you’re having difficulty, see instructions here). Then go to your profile page at this link. You will see the history of your payment plans, unpaid invoices, applications, registrations, and more.

Note: Sometimes Shalem participants have more than one Shalem account if they accidentally registered for different events using different email addresses. If your profile history page doesn’t list your complete history, this might be what has happened. If you believe you might have more than one Shalem account, read here.

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY

How do I access my Online Course or Retreat Day?

Instructions for viewing your course content will be on your receipt. If you’re having difficulty, please read the questions below:

  • Is the course material available at this time? We often open registration before the actual course or retreat day begins. The webpage for that course should tell you which dates the material will be accessible.
  • Do you have the special link to access course material? The link to access course material will be on the receipt sent to the email address used to register for the course. You should receive two receipts: one from Stripe and one from Shalem. It is the receipt from Shalem that will have the link. If you don’t see it, check your spam folder.
  • Are you logged into a Shalem account? You must be logged into a Shalem account in order to access your course content. The email address used for that account must match the email address you used to register for the course. Click here to learn how to create a Shalem account.
  • Does the Shalem account you’re signed into have the same primary email address you used to purchase the online course or retreat day? If you have a duplicate Shalem account with a different email address, it cannot be used to access your course. Email info@shalem.org for help if you have more than one Shalem account and cannot access your online course.
  • Did you clear your browser history? Sometimes clearing your browser history can help.
  • Still having difficulty? We’re sorry you’re having trouble. Please email info@shalem.org for help.

I’m trying to make an online payment, but the page won’t load.

We’re sorry you’re having difficulty. Sometimes clearing your browser history can help with loading times. Or if your internet connectivity is weak, relocating to an area with a stronger signal can help. If you’re still having trouble, you can reach out to the registrar of the program (listed on the program’s webpage) or contact the finance department for help at accounting@shalem.org.

I signed up for the Shalem Mailing List, but I’m not getting emails.

Sometimes our email platform, Mailchimp, believes that an email address no longer works and stops sending emails to that address. Re-subscribing to our mailing list at this link usually fixes the problem. If you’re still having trouble, email michelle@shalem.org.

PAYMENT PLANS (For Long-term Programs or Pilgrimages)

I received tuition assistance, but I don’t see it in my payment plan.

Tuition assistance needs to be added to your payment plan manually, so it will not immediately show up when you first enter a plan. Once the accounting team has entered it, you should be able to see the assistance reflected in your payment plan within your Shalem account (Need help viewing your payment plan?) If you do not see your tuition assistance reflected in your payment plan after a few weeks of entering your payment plan, you can contact accounting@shalem.org.
