Centered on Thurman’s writing in Jesus and the Disinherited, this is a special opportunity to experience Thurman’s enduring and inspiring life and words.

Through audio teaching, guided meditation, reflection questions and invitations into silence, Lerita Coleman Brown invites you into intentional quiet space to reflect on Howard Thurman’s life and book, Jesus and the Disinherited.

Retreat Day Schedule

Below is an outline of the Morning and Afternoon sessions. Give yourself ample time for each session and spacious silence. In addition to the sessions, the retreat day includes a Bibliography and Resource section.

Morning Session
Retreat Intro and Teaching 1: Holy Coincidences in Howard Thurman’s Life with Lerita Coleman Brown (20 min)
Reflection Questions: Silent time for reflection, pondering questions and journaling.

Teaching 2: Jesus and the Disinherited with Lerita Coleman Brown (6 minutes)

Afternoon Session
Teaching 3: Fear, Deception and Jesus (chapters 2 and 3) with Lerita Coleman Brown (10 minutes)

Teaching 4: Hatred and Love (chapters 4 and 5) with Lerita Coleman Brown (20 minutes)

LERITA COLEMAN BROWN

Lerita Coleman Brown, PhD, is a spiritual director/companion, author, Distinguished Professor of Psychology Emerita and past director of the Science Center for Women at Agnes Scott College. She also is a graduate of Shalem’s Nurturing the Call: Spiritual Guidance Program and speaks and writes about contemplative spirituality in everyday life. Her new book, What Makes You Come Alive: A Spiritual Walk with Howard Thurman, was recently released by Broadleaf Press. This book is an excellent companion to Shalem’s Howard Thurman online retreat days that Lerita leads.
